Jonathan's Setback/Bone Graft Alveolor Ridge Surgery

Hanging out in the computer room at the Ronald McDonald House.

Jonathan on his bed at the RMD House.

Having fun in the playroom at RMD house.

Mommy is not wanting to wake up her precious sleeping Jonathan the morning of surgery. Just one picture and then I will wake him up. He must drink now because no more liquids after 8am this morning. He drank 3 cans of Sprite!

All ready to leave. The living room at RMD house.

Ready to Go!

Waiting in the waiting room. It was a long wait. Another little boy is in having the same surgery Jonathan is scheduled to have. It is good to hear the updates his parents are getting. Just don't be too tired doctors for our Jonathan.

Finally in Pre-opt. Jonathan was excited because they have an Xbox in there.

This surgery Jonathan had to have an IV put in before being put out. Policy is that once you turn 9 they no longer give children gas to put them to sleep. He was a bit nervous about this but he did wonderful putting it in. He actually hates the gas mask anyways and I have been told and watched him fight the doctors as they put him under with the gas. The anesthesiologist came in we decided not to give him "versed" after Steven had an adverse reaction to it last month when he had his adenoids taken out (No post about that surgery as Steven said he didn't want to remember it. He told me no pictures.). Her plan was to give him laughing gas through the mask and then sleepy medicine in the IV. I would go back in the cute bunny suit to the OR to be with him while he went to sleep. Well Jonathan didn't like that idea mostly because he hates the oxygen mask. He told me "Why did I have to have the IV if they are still going to give me gas." We reconvened with the anesthesiologist for a new plan. We decided she would give him pain medicine through the IV and then the sleepy medicine (laughing gas is usually given because the sleepy medicine burns when going into the IV). He was such a big boy and climbed onto the operating table and was ready to go. He didn't complain at all and was joking with the student anesthesiologist holding the oxygen mask to him. He whacked the guy in the nose with it (by mistake) at one point. They were laughing without the gas and off to sleep he went. Now it was time to wait. The little boy that went before him took 3 1/2 hours. It is now around 1:30 pm.

Dr. M and Dr. S came out to the waiting room around 5:30 saying surgery was finished. They said all went well. They called a dentist in to do x-rays during surgery because as I knew from a previous doctor they found out that he has many extra teeth in there. They pulled 2 that he won't need - they classified them as extra baby teeth. He has a splint in his mouth that will stay in for 8-12 weeks. In the picture he is sleeping but it was a rough little while. He woke up in lots of pain and lots of blood running out of his mouth. At one point I had to sit down to gather myself - thought I might be sick. We got into a regular room around 9pm.

Jonathan after one night.
He did get a little sick last night but if all goes well we are hoping to go home today. He has to get up and walk, drink and be able to take pain medicine by mouth. He has done all that though he didn't walk very far and is complaining of his hip hurting more than his mouth.
To be continued . . .
